Pick one main plan
Pound walk, gorge drive, or hard peak
First visits work better when you choose one of these, not all three. St Mary Peak, a Brachina drive and a late run back to Adelaide do not fit the same day.
Most first-timers
Wilpena orientation day
- · Visitor Centre + Wangara or Homestead
- · Optional Cazneaux Tree or Hucks Lookout
- · Sleep at Wilpena or Hawker
- · One good walk is enough for a first day
Open one-day plan →
Two nights · cooler months
Wangara then one hard hike
- · Day 1 Wangara · Day 2 St Mary Peak or Ohlssen Bagge
- · Leave by 9am (10am DST) on the hard day
- · Saddle, not summit, as the cultural default
- · Only when trails are confirmed open

What kind of Flinders day?
Filter ideas below. Heat and flood change the day more than Instagram does — always verify conditions.
First-visit walk
Wangara Lookout
Moderate · 3–3.5 hrs · Pound views
The default first walk: creek gums, Hills Homestead, steep rim. Stop at the homestead if heat wins.
Signature hard day
St Mary Peak / Ngarri Mudlanha
Hard · 6–9 hrs · early start
Full-day when open. Tanderra Saddle is the respectful high point. Often closed in summer.
Drive day
Brachina Geological Trail
Unsealed · geology · wallabies
Self-drive geology trail if roads are open. Late afternoon is the usual time for yellow-footed rock-wallabies.
Cultural site
Arkaroo Rock
Respectful distance · morning light
Adnyamathanha paintings. Do not touch. Sacred Canyon is guided only.
Easy win
Cazneaux Tree
Short · photography · recovery
River red gum, 1937 photograph, interpretive trail. Stay off the roots.
Shorter hard hike
Mount Ohlssen Bagge
Hard · ~4 hrs · steep
Pound views without St Mary Peak length. Summer-closed. Not after the peak the same day.

Wangara Lookout
moderateThe best first walk in the park for most visitors: follow Wilpena Creek through river red gums and native pines to Hills Homestead, then a steep climb to lower and upper lookouts over Ikara (Wilpena Pound). St Mary Peak / Ngarri Mudlanha is visible from the rim.
- Grade
- Moderate–hard (steep final climb)
- Time
- Lower ~3 hrs · upper ~3.5 hrs return
- Distance
- Lower lookout ~7.2 km return · upper ~7.8 km return
View guide →
St Mary Peak
hardThe park’s hardest popular day hike: substantial elevation, heat, and a culturally important summit. Rangers recommend leaving no later than 9am (10am during daylight saving). Traditional Owners prefer visitors do not climb the absolute summit — Tanderra Saddle already delivers the main Pound views.
- Grade
- Hard / challenging full-day hike
- Time
- Direct ~6 hrs return · loop ~9 hrs
- Distance
- Direct ~14.6 km return · loop ~21.5 km
View guide →
Brachina Gorge
easyThe park’s main scenic drive: signed rock sequences, fossil context, and yellow-footed rock-wallaby habitat (try Scree Slope in late afternoon). Unsealed. Closes after rain. Check live road reports before you go.
- Grade
- Self-drive geological trail (walks optional)
- Time
- Half day with stops · longer if you add camp or wallaby time
- Distance
- ~20 km self-drive trail
View guide →
Before you walk or drive
- Carry ≥4 L water per person for walks over two hours. No reliable natural water.
- Summer maxima commonly 30–45°C. Longer trails often close Dec–Feb.
- Mobile coverage is patchy — 000 needs reception. Download offline maps.
- Unsealed roads close after rain. Check DIT Outback Road Report.
- Cultural sites: do not touch, climb or remove anything. Summit request on Ngarri Mudlanha.
- Official: know before you go

- Wide-brim sun hatOpen Pound floor and lookouts have little shade once you leave the creek gums

- Lightweight sun shirtLong sleeves beat repeated sunscreen on all-day Pound walks
- Day pack 20–30 LWater, layers, snacks, first aid and extra jacket as rangers recommend
- Light insulating layerMornings and lookouts can be cold even when midday hits the thirties

FAQ
Common Flinders Ranges questions
Short answers for planning. Official alerts, fees and rules always win over any blog — including this one.
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park open right now?
Always check the official alerts page before you travel. At last review (20 Aug 2026) the park was listed Open daily with part closures: Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorge Roads closed pending repair, walking trails into Wilpena Pound closed pending damage assessment, pest-control night closures on named tracks through 31 Oct 2026, and a rally on 21 Sep 2026. This site does not show live status.
Is there an entry fee?
Yes — vehicle day entry is paid in advance (official page: $14.40 per vehicle at last review — [VERIFY] live). SA park passes cover vehicle entry only. Camping is a separate fee. This site never sells park fees.
Can I day-trip Ikara from Adelaide?
Not as a first-visit product. About 450 km / five hours each way via Port Augusta and Hawker, then the sealed road to Wilpena. No meaningful public transport. Sleep nearby before any hard walk — St Mary Peak wants a 9am start, not a 2pm arrival.
What should I do first?
Wilpena Visitor Centre, then Wangara Lookout (or Hills Homestead if heat or kids say so). St Mary Peak / Ngarri Mudlanha is a separate full day when open — Traditional Owners prefer you do not climb the absolute summit.
Is this site official NPWSSA?
No. This is an independent unofficial guide published by Farming Domains (Ian Piggott). For alerts, fees, camping and official rules use parks.sa.gov.au only.
