Brachina and Bunyeroo closed after rain: Plan B

Decision first: if Brachina Gorge Road or Bunyeroo Gorge Road is closed, the gorge day is over. You do not “have a quick look,” you do not take a station track, and you do not put a sedan on a wet clay crest because the itinerary named wallabies. Stay on the sealed road to Wilpena or wait in Hawker and re-check official sources in the morning.

Rain closures are this park’s operating system. Official public gorge roads are high-clearance 2WD in good conditions; after rain that sentence dies. At last NPWSSA review (updated 10 September 2026) both gorge roads remained closed pending repair, and creeks in the Pound were still flowing and considered dangerous to cross. Named walks were listed open; the Pound trail only as far as the vehicle turn-around shelter. That is a part closure, not a park-wide shutdown — and not a licence to invent a rim walk past what the notice names.

Plan B that still delivers a Flinders day: Wilpena Visitor Centre, the Old Homestead walk if listed open, Arkaroo Rock, Cazneaux / Spirit of Endurance if listed open, Hucks Lookout from the sealed approach, a Hawker town reset, or skip and keep the group for a road-open morning. Partial days are competence.

The decision at the sealed-road junction

Open the day with a go/no-go rule spoken at Wilpena: if NPWSSA or the Outback Road Report says Brachina or Bunyeroo is closed, we do not leave the sealed spine. If the report is unsure, we stay put. Uncertainty is a red light.

A closed gate is information, not an insult. Circling for a station track while kids escalate is how pleasant half-days become recovery jobs. Legal options only: wait in town, switch to a listed-open walk, or leave.

Success metric: you executed a Plan B that matches the notice, not a story about almost making the wallabies.

NPWSSA (updated 10 September 2026): after heavy rain, Bunyeroo Gorge Road and Brachina Gorge Road remain closed pending repair. Creeks in the Pound are still flowing and considered dangerous to cross.

Areas the same notice listed as currently open include Appealinna Ruins, Arkaroo Rock, Spirit of Endurance Trail, Boom & Bust Track, Wilkawillina Gorge Hike, the Visitor Centre to Old Wilpena Homestead walk, St Mary Peak outside trail and Mt Ohlssen Bagge (care), the Pound trail up to the vehicle turn-around shelter (care at wash-outs), and Wilpena Resort.

This paragraph will go stale. Screenshot the live closures page on Hawker Wi-Fi. Do not treat this article as a gate list on your travel date.

Plan B menu on the sealed spine

Plan B one — Visitor Centre and Old Homestead walk when that corridor is listed open. It is not Wangara. It is still a Pound-floor orientation.

Plan B two — Arkaroo Rock (when open): a cultural art site with its own respect rules, not a gorge substitute scramble.

Plan B three — Spirit of Endurance / Cazneaux Tree if listed open, plus Hucks Lookout from the sealed approach.

Plan B four — Hawker town reset: fuel, food, sleep, re-check roads tomorrow. Soft Booking searches on the stay hub are optional commercial beds — never NPWSSA camping. Official camps stay on parks.sa.gov.au.

What never to invent

Do not invent a 2WD “it will be fine” after overnight rain. Do not invent a Wangara rim walk if the notice only opens the Pound trail as far as the vehicle turn-around shelter.

Do not treat the 6–9 November 2026 pest window as the same product as rain repair. They are different alerts. Recheck live.

Fossils stay in the ground on a later open day. Wallabies at Scree Slope require the road. Binoculars from a legal pull-off beat a closed-gate argument.

Official vs the sign

The DIT Outback Road Report (1300 361 033) and NPWSSA closures are live-adjacent sources. This page is a decision script. Trailhead tape and a closed gate win every argument with a printed itinerary.

Vehicle entry already paid does not entitle you to a gorge. SA park passes still do not include camping. This site never affiliates official bookings.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

The park page says Open daily — can we still force Brachina?

Open daily is not the same as every road and trail open. Part-closure alerts can keep gorge roads shut pending repair. Recheck the closures hub and the Outback Road Report the morning you leave Wilpena.

Is there a back way around a closed gorge gate?

Do not invent one. Wait in Hawker, Quorn or Port Augusta. A recovery bill in remote country is not a geology day.

If Pound walking trails are also closed, what is left?

Use sites the current official alert lists as open. At the 10 Sep 2026 snapshot that included Arkaroo Rock, Appealinna, Spirit of Endurance, Boom & Bust, Wilkawillina, Old Homestead walk, St Mary Peak outside trail and Ohlssen Bagge with care, the Pound trail only to the vehicle turn-around shelter, and Wilpena Resort. Verify live — lists move as water recedes.

Is the November pest closure the same as rain repair?

No. Rain repair can last until works finish. The 6–9 November 2026 notice (9pm 6 Nov to 9pm 9 Nov) is a separate pest-control window for most of the park. Check the dated notice that actually applies to your morning.
