Adelaide drive day, then a Wilpena morning
Best for: First-timers who refuse a same-day Adelaide peak attempt
Guide updated · verify NPWSSA the morning you go
Treat the five-hour drive as day one. Sleep at Hawker or Wilpena. Next morning: Visitor Centre plus one Pound walk or lookout. No St Mary Peak, no gorge transfer, no dusk CBD return after a rim climb.

This is the missing operator plan. Thousands of Adelaide trips fail because people treat 450 km as a prelude to Wangara. The drive is the first product. The walk is the second morning.
Pay vehicle entry before you leave town. Shop and download maps in Port Augusta or Hawker. There is no boom-gate to save a forgotten payment after dark at Wilpena.
Sleep the first night at Hawker if you arrive late or the resort is full. Sleep at Wilpena if you can — tomorrow’s 8am Visitor Centre check becomes a stroll, not another transfer.
Day two is the one-day Pound card at honest size: Visitor Centre, then Homestead or Wangara, then one easy second stop if energy remains. St Mary Peak is off this plan. Brachina is off this plan.
Always verify alerts, fire rating and the Outback Road Report the morning you leave Adelaide and again at Wilpena. This itinerary is planning guidance — not live access.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NPWSSA before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Weeks before
Book the night near the park
Wilpena rooms or camp (private desk) or a Hawker bed. Do not leave the overnight to “we’ll see when we get there.” If both are full, Port Augusta is a last-resort sleep that makes day two a long morning — still better than a same-day peak attempt.
Night before (Adelaide)
Pay entry, pack water, name the no-list
Pay vehicle entry on parks.sa.gov.au. Screenshot alerts and an offline map. Say out loud: no St Mary Peak, no unsealed gorge, no dusk return to the CBD after a walk. Pack 4 L capacity, hats and a lunch that survives heat. Sleep early — you are driving, not holidaying yet.
Day 1 — morning
Leave Adelaide with a shop stop planned
A civilised 7–8am departure still puts you at Hawker mid-afternoon if you do not invent Clare Valley detours. Fuel and a real supermarket at Port Augusta. Recheck CFS rating and park alerts on town Wi-Fi. If alerts show a park or trail shutdown, stop in Port Augusta or Hawker and shrink the plan — do not “just go look.”
Day 1 — afternoon
Hawker or Wilpena check-in — no rim walk
Check in. Eat. Fill bottles. If you reach Wilpena with daylight and honest legs, Cazneaux Tree or Hucks Lookout is the only optional add. Do not walk to Hills Homestead after five hours in the car. Early night.
Day 2 — 08:00–08:30
Wilpena Visitor Centre
Confirm what is open. Register if you will be out three or more hours. Plan A = Wangara or Homestead. Plan B = tree + sealed lookout. If staff say the walk is closed, that is the day — not a prompt to invent a back route.
Day 2 — 08:30–12:30
One Pound walk
Hills Homestead out-and-back, or Wangara if water, heat and knees agree at the homestead decision point. Carry 4 L+ per person for walks over two hours. Turn around on a clock time. This is the whole point of sleeping nearby.
Day 2 — afternoon
One easy stop, then start south in daylight
Cazneaux Tree or Hucks — pick one — then fuel at Hawker. If you must reach Adelaide tonight, leave Wilpena by mid-afternoon and swap drivers at Port Augusta. Do not add Brachina “because we’re driving past.”
Evening
Home or Port Augusta — honest debrief
A late Adelaide return is acceptable after a morning walk and a daylight highway. It is not acceptable after a peak or a gorge. Note what to book earlier next time (Wilpena night, two-day walks card).

Parking & access tips
- Port Augusta is the last full supermarket and the reliable fuel stop.
- Hawker is the last small-town reset before the sealed park road.
- Use signed Wilpena visitor / resort parks only.
- If you arrive late, skip the walk — sleep is the product.
Skip if short on time / energy
- St Mary Peak / Ngarri Mudlanha
- Mount Ohlssen Bagge “while we’re here”
- Brachina or Bunyeroo on the drive in or out
- Same-day Adelaide → peak → Adelaide
- A dusk five-hour return after a tired Pound walk
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Adelaide or airport visitors who will not fake a day trip
- First-timers who want one real Pound walk
- Groups who can book one night near the park
- Anyone who has already learned the five-hour drive is not a prelude
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If you cannot book a night near the park: do not invent a peak day from Adelaide
- If alerts are ugly at Port Augusta: stop there — do not “just go look”
- If you arrive after 4pm: check in and stop walking
- If anyone is cooked after Homestead: skip Wangara and the second stop
What success looks like
- Drive completed without treating it as a warm-up hike
- One Pound walk or an honest lookout-only morning
- Daylight on the highway south
- Notes to book the two-day walks card next cooler season

- Wangara / Wangarra Lookout Hike (incl. Hills Homestead)The best first walk in the park for most visitors: follow Wilpena Creek through river red gums and native pines to Hills Homestead, then a steep climb to lower and upper lookouts over Ikara (Wilpena Pound). St Mary Peak / Ngarri Mudlanha is visible from the rim.
- Cazneaux Tree & Spirit of Endurance TrailThe river red gum Harold Cazneaux photographed in 1937 as “Spirit of Endurance,” plus a longer interpretive trail that also honours Adnyamathanha endurance on Country. Near the old Wilpena Eating House remains.

What to bring
Practical kit for cliff walks and changeable mountain weather

- Wide-brim sun hatOpen Pound floor and lookouts have little shade once you leave the creek gums

- Grip hiking shoesSt Mary Peak and Ohlssen Bagge are rocky, steep and loose — fashion sneakers fail
- Lightweight sun shirtLong sleeves beat repeated sunscreen on all-day Pound walks
- Day pack 20–30 LWater, layers, snacks, first aid and extra jacket as rangers recommend
- Light insulating layerMornings and lookouts can be cold even when midday hits the thirties

- Offline maps + power bankCoverage is patchy in gorges and low country — download official maps before you leave town
- Personal locator beacon (optional)Realistic for remote / multi-day / Heysen segments. Not required for a Wilpena lookout stroll.
- First-aid + blister kitRocky descents and heat punish hot spots early
- Trekking poles (optional)Helpful on the steep final climb to Wangara and the St Mary Peak scarp
