One day: Pound lookouts & Wilpena orientation
Best for: First visit · mixed energy · when long trails are closed
Guide updated · verify NPWSSA the morning you go
Arrive, check alerts at the Visitor Centre, walk Wangara or Hills Homestead, then add Hucks Lookout or the Cazneaux Tree. Leave St Mary Peak for another day.

A single Flinders day only works if you already slept nearby or you accept that Adelaide is a five-hour each-way commitment. Success is one Pound walk plus one lookout, not a gorge circuit and a peak.
Pay vehicle entry before you leave town. There is no boom-gate as the main model. Screenshot alerts, the summer-closures map and an offline park map on Hawker or Port Augusta Wi-Fi.
As of the last official-page review (12 Sep 2026), Brachina / Bunyeroo Gorge Roads were closed pending repair and Pound creeks were dangerous to cross. Some named walks were listed open; the Pound walking trail only as far as the vehicle turn-around shelter. This is a suggested day, not live access. Recheck alerts the morning you go.
If the hard walk is closed, lookouts and the tree are still a good day. Do not invent a substitute peak because the itinerary originally named Wangara.
If you are still in Adelaide the night before, this is the wrong card — open the Adelaide-drive itinerary instead. A 5am CBD departure plus Wangara plus a dusk return is how fatigue accidents happen.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NPWSSA before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Night before
Pay entry and agree Plan A / Plan B
Pay vehicle entry on parks.sa.gov.au. Screenshot alerts and an offline park map. Say the plan out loud: Plan A = Visitor Centre + Wangara. Plan B = Homestead only, then Cazneaux Tree or Hucks Lookout. St Mary Peak is off this plan. Sleep at Wilpena or Hawker — not Adelaide.
If you slept in Hawker
Leave earlier than feels polite
Hawker to Wilpena is a sealed but real transfer. Pack water and lunch the night before so you are not shopping at 7:45. If anyone is already tired from yesterday’s Adelaide drive, drop Plan A to Homestead-only before you leave the motel.
07:30–08:15
Wilpena Visitor Centre
Be there when it opens (typically 8am — [VERIFY] hours). Confirm trails, roads and fire rating. Register if you will be out three or more hours. Use toilets and fill bottles here. If staff say the walk is closed, switch to Plan B immediately.
08:15–12:00
Primary walk — Wangara or Homestead
Follow Wilpena Creek to Hills Homestead. Decide there: homestead only if heat or kids say so; lower lookout for the classic Pound view; upper lookout only if water and knees remain. Carry at least four litres per person for walks over two hours. Turn around on a clock time, not “we’ll see.”
12:00–13:30
Shade, food, honest energy check
Eat at Wilpena. If anyone is heat-sick, stop. A homestead morning plus shade is a complete Flinders day. Do not add Ohlssen Bagge because there is still daylight.
13:30–16:00
One easy second stop
Cazneaux Tree or Hucks Lookout — pick one. Stay off the tree roots. Keep wheels on formed lookout ground. If the group is done, skip the second stop without guilt.
Evening
Sleep close — do not start Adelaide
Wilpena or Hawker. A dusk five-hour drive after a Pound walk is how fatigue accidents happen. Debrief: what to do tomorrow, not what you failed to collect today.
If you must start Adelaide tonight
That is a different (worse) plan
Leave the lookout by mid-afternoon, eat before Hawker, swap drivers at Port Augusta, and treat it as a failure of sequencing — not a badge. Book a Hawker or Port Augusta bed next time. Do not “just do Brachina on the way out.”

Parking & access tips
- Use signed Wilpena visitor / resort parks.
- Do not leave bags visible.
- Lookout pulls are short — keep wheels on formed ground.
- If Wilpena lots are messy, do the Visitor Centre first and walk — do not invent parking on vegetation.
- Hucks Lookout is a short sealed pull — keep all wheels on formed ground and do not stop in the travel lane.
Skip if short on time / energy
- St Mary Peak / Ngarri Mudlanha
- Mount Ohlssen Bagge “while we’re here”
- Brachina full geological trail on the same day
- Aroona overnight with no booking
- Same-day Adelaide return after a tired Pound walk
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- First visit after sleeping at Wilpena or Hawker
- Mixed energy, kids, or heat days
- Groups who will treat a closed trail as a successful decision
- Anyone who refuses a same-day Adelaide peak attempt
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If alerts show park or trail closures: stay on sealed roads and lookouts — do not improvise a back way
- If anyone is unsteady at Hills Homestead: turn around — the Pound is already visible
- If the forecast is ugly: Cazneaux Tree + Hucks, not the rim climb
- If you only slept in Port Augusta: this is still a long day — protect the drive home
What success looks like
- One Pound walk completed well, or an honest homestead-only day
- Everyone sleeping nearby with water left in the bottles
- No invented hard walk after lunch
- Notes for next time: two-day plan if you still want the peak

- Wangara / Wangarra Lookout Hike (incl. Hills Homestead)The best first walk in the park for most visitors: follow Wilpena Creek through river red gums and native pines to Hills Homestead, then a steep climb to lower and upper lookouts over Ikara (Wilpena Pound). St Mary Peak / Ngarri Mudlanha is visible from the rim.
- Cazneaux Tree & Spirit of Endurance TrailThe river red gum Harold Cazneaux photographed in 1937 as “Spirit of Endurance,” plus a longer interpretive trail that also honours Adnyamathanha endurance on Country. Near the old Wilpena Eating House remains.

What to bring
Practical kit for cliff walks and changeable mountain weather
- Water 3–4 L+ capacityOfficial guidance: at least 4 L per person for walks over two hours. No reliable natural water.
- Wide-brim sun hatOpen Pound floor and lookouts have little shade once you leave the creek gums

- Grip hiking shoesSt Mary Peak and Ohlssen Bagge are rocky, steep and loose — fashion sneakers fail
- Lightweight sun shirtLong sleeves beat repeated sunscreen on all-day Pound walks
- Day pack 20–30 LWater, layers, snacks, first aid and extra jacket as rangers recommend
- Light insulating layerMornings and lookouts can be cold even when midday hits the thirties

- Offline maps + power bankCoverage is patchy in gorges and low country — download official maps before you leave town
- Personal locator beacon (optional)Realistic for remote / multi-day / Heysen segments. Not required for a Wilpena lookout stroll.
- First-aid + blister kitRocky descents and heat punish hot spots early
- Trekking poles (optional)Helpful on the steep final climb to Wangara and the St Mary Peak scarp
