Two days: Wangara then one hard Pound hike
Best for: Fit visitors in April–October when long trails are open
Guide updated · verify NPWSSA the morning you go
Day one: Wangara and orientation. Day two: St Mary Peak to Tanderra Saddle (or Ohlssen Bagge if the peak is closed) with a 9am-or-earlier start.

This is the usual plan if you came to walk. It only works in cooler months, when trails are open, and if the group is actually fit enough.
Traditional Owners prefer you do not climb the absolute summit of Ngarri Mudlanha. Plan Tanderra Saddle as the win. Tell the group that before you leave the trailhead.
Day one is orientation, not a dress rehearsal of the peak. Wangara plus an early night is how day two still has water and knees.
Verify summer closures, pest-control night windows and fire ratings the night before day two. A printed date in this plan is not live status.
If the group cannot honour a 9am start, this is not a two-day peak plan. Swap day two to lookouts or the family card. Late starts on St Mary Peak are how people finish in the dark on loose quartzite.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NPWSSA before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Day 0 — travel
Arrive and shrink the plan
Drive Adelaide → Port Augusta → Hawker → Wilpena. Shop and download maps before Hawker. Pay vehicle entry. Check CFS rating and park alerts. Sleep at Wilpena if you can — Hawker works if the resort is full, but pack the night before so a 9am start still happens.
Day 1 — morning
Visitor Centre, then Wangara
Confirm tomorrow’s hard walk is open. Register if today will be three or more hours. Walk Wangara (or Homestead if heat says so). This is the Pound education day, not a time trial.
Day 1 — afternoon
Recovery stop, early night
Cazneaux Tree or Old Wilpena Station. Eat, hydrate, pack 4 L+ and a jacket for tomorrow. Lights out early. Do not add Ohlssen Bagge “to test the legs.”
Day 2 — 07:30–09:00
Hard-walk go / no-go
Recheck alerts at the Visitor Centre. If St Mary Peak is closed, switch to Ohlssen Bagge or abort to lookouts. Log the Bushwalkers Register. Leave no later than 9am (10am DST). Agree a clock-time turnaround.
Day 2 — 09:00–15:00
One hard hike only
St Mary Peak direct route to Tanderra Saddle if open; otherwise Mount Ohlssen Bagge. Carry 4 L+ each. Turn around on time, or earlier if heat or rock is winning. Do not continue to the absolute summit. Do not add a gorge drive after.
Day 2 — evening
Shade and sleep
Food, water, early night. If you must leave for Adelaide, do it the next morning — not after a six-hour scarp day.
Day 3 — optional
Leave in daylight, or add one easy stop only
Cazneaux Tree or Hucks on the way south if legs are honest. No gorge transfer, no second peak. Fuel at Hawker. Port Augusta is the last full shop if you are heading home. Wildlife on the sealed road at dusk — slow down.

Parking & access tips
- Trailhead car parks fill on long weekends — arrive the night before a hard hike.
- Do not leave valuables visible at Wilpena.
- If you sleep in Hawker, leave earlier than feels polite.
- Register walks of three or more hours at the Visitor Centre — that is the official desk, not a suggestion.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Malloga Falls
- Bridle Gap
- Heysen through-sections
- Brachina on the same afternoon as the peak
- Absolute summit of Ngarri Mudlanha
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Fit walkers in April–October
- Groups who will honour the saddle request
- People who can sleep at Wilpena the night before the hard day
- Visitors who will abort if the trail is closed
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If the peak is closed: Ohlssen Bagge or lookouts — not a secret back route
- If anyone is cooked after Wangara: cancel day two hard walk
- If you leave after 9am: shrink to Ohlssen or abort
- If water is below plan at the saddle: turn around immediately
What success looks like
- Tanderra Saddle or Ohlssen views, whole group walking out
- No gorge “bonus” after a mountain day
- Early night, not a five-hour dusk drive to Adelaide
Related trail guides
- Wangara / Wangarra Lookout Hike (incl. Hills Homestead)The best first walk in the park for most visitors: follow Wilpena Creek through river red gums and native pines to Hills Homestead, then a steep climb to lower and upper lookouts over Ikara (Wilpena Pound). St Mary Peak / Ngarri Mudlanha is visible from the rim.
- St Mary Peak Hike – Ngarri MudlanhaThe park’s hardest popular day hike: substantial elevation, heat, and a culturally important summit. Rangers recommend leaving no later than 9am (10am during daylight saving). Traditional Owners prefer visitors do not climb the absolute summit — Tanderra Saddle already delivers the main Pound views.
- Mount Ohlssen Bagge HikeSteep, rocky, excellent Pound views in a shorter package than St Mary Peak. Typically closed in December, January and February. Same Wilpena trailhead; same heat and register rules.

What to bring
Practical kit for cliff walks and changeable mountain weather
- Water 3–4 L+ capacityOfficial guidance: at least 4 L per person for walks over two hours. No reliable natural water.
- Wide-brim sun hatOpen Pound floor and lookouts have little shade once you leave the creek gums
- SPF50 + sunglassesPale quartzite and dry air burn even on “cool” April days
- Grip hiking shoesSt Mary Peak and Ohlssen Bagge are rocky, steep and loose — fashion sneakers fail
- Lightweight sun shirtLong sleeves beat repeated sunscreen on all-day Pound walks
- Day pack 20–30 LWater, layers, snacks, first aid and extra jacket as rangers recommend
- Light insulating layerMornings and lookouts can be cold even when midday hits the thirties
- HeadlampLonger walks plus early starts; pest-control night closures make dusk finishes a planning issue
- Offline maps + power bankCoverage is patchy in gorges and low country — download official maps before you leave town
- Personal locator beacon (optional)Realistic for remote / multi-day / Heysen segments. Not required for a Wilpena lookout stroll.
- First-aid + blister kitRocky descents and heat punish hot spots early
- Trekking poles (optional)Helpful on the steep final climb to Wangara and the St Mary Peak scarp
