Park overview

Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park is about 95,000 hectares of semi-arid quartzite ranges north of Adelaide. Most visitors treat Wilpena as the hub and add one gorge drive if roads are open — they do not “do the park.” This hub is how you pick a base that matches time, heat and vehicle.

Always verify live conditions on the official NPWSSA park page and alerts. This site is independent and unofficial.

How to choose an area

First visit, limited time: Wilpena Pound for the Visitor Centre and Wangara (or Hills Homestead if heat or kids say so). Leave St Mary Peak for another day.

Drive day when roads are open: Brachina and Bunyeroo — only after the Outback Road Report and park alerts agree. After rain, stay on the sealed Wilpena road.

Second or third night: Trezona or Aroona if you have booked. Do not leave Wilpena for an unbooked gorge camp after dark.

Heat, mixed energy, or closed trails: lookouts (Hucks, Stokes Hill) and Arkaroo Rock. That is still a good Flinders day.

Recommended order: sleep near Wilpena → one Pound walk → one lookout or gorge drive if roads allow → northern camp only after a booking → shop and reset in Hawker or Port Augusta.

Geography in plain English

Think of the tourist park as a sealed arrival to Wilpena plus a fan of unsealed gorge roads. Towns — Hawker, Quorn, Blinman, Port Augusta — are where you shop and reset. The national park holds the Pound, gorges and camps; Wilpena Pound Resort is a separate private operator inside the boundary.

There is no useful public transport. Budget the Adelaide drive as a day of its own, not a prelude to a peak. Unsealed roads close after rain; at last review Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorge Roads were closed pending repair, and pest or rain notices can shut those gorges. Recheck alerts the morning you travel — do not treat a printed date as live status.
