Hawker is the nearest service town. Quorn sits south, Blinman north, Port Augusta is the last full supermarket.
- Best for: Fuel, groceries, a quieter night after the Adelaide drive
- Time: Pass-through stop or one night each end of a park stay
- Hawker to Wilpena is the sealed last stretch. Shop on the way — do not assume Wilpena has what you need.

Shop before the Pound
Port Augusta is the last big shop. Hawker covers basics. Wilpena has a general store with limited, expensive stock. Plan water and food as if the store is closed — because hours, floods and demand can make that true.
Download offline maps, the Discover the Flinders Ranges app and the Flinders Ranges Walks app in town. Screenshot alerts and bookings while you still have ordinary coverage.
Hawker as the practical gateway
Hawker is the nearest service town to Wilpena: fuel, a grocery reset, and commercial beds that are not the resort. The last stretch to Wilpena is sealed. That is why Hawker works as the night-before or night-after town when Wilpena is full or too dear.
If you sleep in Hawker before St Mary Peak, leave earlier than feels polite. You still want to be walking by 9am (10am DST) when the trail is open. The drive is short; packing and breakfast are what run late.
Quorn, Blinman and Port Augusta
Quorn sits south on Flinders Ranges Way — useful if you are coming from Adelaide and want a quieter night without driving the last hour in the dark. It is not a substitute for a Wilpena trailhead morning.
Blinman is the historic copper town north of Wilpena. It pairs with a northern-camp stay more than with a first-night Pound walk. Confirm fuel hours; do not assume a late bowser.
Port Augusta is the last full supermarket, hospital-scale services and the NPWSSA office ((08) 8648 5300). Sleep here only if you accept a long next-morning drive. After-hours duty officer for Flinders & Outback is published separately — use official numbers, not this site, in an emergency. Call 000 first.
Sleep in town vs sleep at Wilpena
Wilpena if you can — short walk to the trailhead and a 9am-or-earlier departure. Hawker if Wilpena is full or you want town services. Port Augusta only as a travel-day reset, not as a peak-day base.
Town beds may appear as Booking.com searches on this site and may earn a commission. Official NPWSSA camping and park-entry fees never do. Book camps only on parks.sa.gov.au.

FAQ — Gateways
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Where should I sleep the night before a St Mary Peak start?
Wilpena if you can — you want a short walk to the trailhead and a 9am-or-earlier departure. Hawker works if Wilpena is full; allow extra time in the morning for the drive.
Is Hawker inside the national park?
No. Hawker is the nearest service town. The park starts on the sealed road toward Wilpena. Town shops and pubs are ordinary commercial businesses, not NPWSSA facilities.
Should I shop in Port Augusta or Hawker?
Port Augusta for a real supermarket shop. Hawker for last fuel, ice and basics. Do not rely on the Wilpena store for a multi-day camp list.
