Why leave Wilpena
Wilpena is convenient. Aroona is why painters stayed. Framed by the Heysen and ABC ranges, with a spring and pastoral ruins, it is the northern character of the park — and the start of several loop walks. It is also further from help, fuel and a public phone.
Move camp only after a night at Wilpena, a road-report check, and a booking you can show on a screenshot. The northern park rewards people who have already learned the heat, the dust and how long a “short” unsealed transfer actually takes.
Book before you move camp
NPWSSA camps (Aroona, Trezona, Brachina East, Koolamon, Youngoona and the rest) book on parks.sa.gov.au. That is a separate fee from vehicle entry and from the private Wilpena camp. Official hiker-only sites start from $12.30/night on the official page; most vehicle sites start higher ([VERIFY] per camp).
Trezona if you want Geological Trail access and more sites. Aroona if you want the valley and loop walks. Book either before you leave Wilpena. Walk-up hope is not a plan.
This site never sells park camping. Official bookings stay on parks.sa.gov.au. Commercial beds in Hawker or Blinman may be affiliate — camping never is.
Water, fires and coverage
Bring all drinking water you can carry. Camp tanks are not guaranteed full or drinkable. There is no reliable natural water on the walks.
Seasonal fire rules apply; no firewood collection. Wood / solid-fuel fires have a published prohibition window (example 16 Oct–1 Apr — [VERIFY] current). Gas is the usual legal option except total fire ban days.
Coverage is worse than Wilpena. Screenshot bookings and alerts, download offline maps, and tell someone your camp and latest return before you drop into the valley. 000 needs reception.
Walks from Aroona and Trezona
From Aroona: Red Hill Lookout, Yuluna, and the longer Aroona–Youngoona traverse if you have a car shuffle or accept an out-and-back. From Trezona: the Trezona Hike and Geological Trail access.
Heysen Trail walkers need purchased topo maps — park brochure maps are not enough for long sections. Wilcolo is walk-in / hike-bike only; do not drive in looking for a vehicle site.
One hard walk per moving day. Transferring camp and then starting a seven-hour traverse is how groups run out of water and daylight.
