Why Wilpena is the default first stop
If someone says they are “doing the Flinders Ranges,” they usually mean Wilpena: the Pound walls, a Visitor Centre that actually exists, and trailheads you can walk to from a bed. That concentration is the gift. The problem is treating it as a theme park you finish before lunch on a day trip from Adelaide.
Ikara means meeting place. The Pound is a remnant valley floor inside quartzite walls — roughly 17 km by 8 km including the ranges. You understand it from Wangara or a lookout drive long before you need St Mary Peak.
Treat Wilpena as orientation, not a checklist. Nail one Pound walk, decide honestly whether heat and energy support a harder day, then use shade, food and a nearby bed as the buffer — not a five-hour drive back to Adelaide after a tired climb.
Use the Visitor Centre
Wilpena Pound Visitor Centre is the practical hub: maps, current track advice, the Bushwalkers Register for walks of three or more hours, and bookings for the privately run Wilpena camp / permanent tents. Published hours are 8am–5pm daily (6pm in school holidays appears in some notes — [VERIFY]). There is a public phone; the resort has some internet. That is not the same as coverage in Brachina Gorge.
Ask about today’s closures before you lace up. Flood, fire-danger, summer-trail and pest-control rules change. Staff cannot fix a missed parks.sa.gov.au camp booking, and they cannot invent a St Mary Peak opening that alerts have already closed.
Old Wilpena Station (open 8am–5pm daily on the official page) is a separate pastoral-heritage precinct with the Living with Land walk — useful on a heat day when long trails are a bad idea.
Walks that actually fit a Wilpena stay
Easy wins: Cazneaux Tree, Hills Homestead without the lookout climb, Boom and Bust from the same trailhead. These still need water, a hat and a turnaround time.
Default first real walk: Wangara Lookout. Hard optional: Mount Ohlssen Bagge or St Mary Peak — one per day, only when open, only with an early start (leave by 9am, 10am DST). Traditional Owners prefer visitors stop at Tanderra Saddle rather than the absolute summit.
Malloga Falls (~23 km) is for experienced walkers, needs a talk with Visitor Centre staff, and is summer-closed. Bridle Gap (~18.8 km) follows the Heysen Trail across the Pound floor. Neither belongs on a first afternoon.
If the hero walk is closed, lookouts and the tree are still a good day. Do not invent a substitute peak because the itinerary said “hard walk.”
Three fee systems at one hub
Vehicle entry, park passes and camping are separate. Pay vehicle entry in advance on parks.sa.gov.au (official page $14.40 per vehicle at last review — [VERIFY]). SA park passes cover vehicle entry only. They do not include a tent site.
Wilpena powered sites and permanent tents book with the Resort / Visitor Centre. That is a private desk. Acraman, Aroona, Trezona and the other NPWSSA camps book on parks.sa.gov.au and are a different product. Mixing the two is how people arrive unpaid or unbooked.
No walk permit for standard day walks. Register walks of three or more hours at the Wilpena trailhead. Cultural-respect requests are not a permit — they are how visitors are asked to behave.
Heat, coverage and culture at the hub
April–October is the published comfortable walking season. Summer maxima commonly 30–45°C; longer trails including St Mary Peak typically close December–February ([VERIFY] the current summer-closures map). Carry at least four litres per person for walks over two hours. There is no reliable natural water.
Official visitor information: mobile coverage can be patchy and unreliable, especially once you leave the precinct. Wilpena has a public phone. Download offline maps and screenshot alerts on Hawker or Port Augusta Wi-Fi. 000 needs reception.
Adnyamathanha Country. Do not touch, climb or remove anything at cultural sites. Sacred Canyon is guided only. Dogs are not permitted (assistance dogs under published policy).

St Mary Peak
hardThe park’s hardest popular day hike: substantial elevation, heat, and a culturally important summit. Rangers recommend leaving no later than 9am (10am during daylight saving). Traditional Owners prefer visitors do not climb the absolute summit — Tanderra Saddle already delivers the main Pound views.

- Direct ~14.6 km return · loop ~21.5 km

Wangara Lookout

FAQ — Wilpena
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Can I day-trip Wilpena from Adelaide?
It is about five hours each way. A same-day St Mary Peak after that drive is how people get into trouble. Overnight at Wilpena or Hawker is the competent plan.
Is Wilpena camping the same as park campgrounds?
No. Wilpena Pound campground is privately operated via the Resort / Visitor Centre. Acraman, Aroona, Trezona and the other NPWSSA sites book on parks.sa.gov.au and are a separate fee.
Do I need a walk permit?
No permit for standard day walks. Log the Bushwalkers Register for walks of three or more hours. Check cultural-respect requests and current closures.
What if St Mary Peak is closed?
Wangara, Hills Homestead, Hucks Lookout and the Cazneaux Tree still make a full day. Do not stack Ohlssen Bagge as a “replacement peak” on a hot afternoon.
