Sleep Wilpena if you can — Visitor Centre, toilets, homestead bail-out. Hawker if the resort is full: last basics on the sealed road, still a morning drive. Fuel and a real supermarket belong in Port Augusta the day before.

Guide updated · verify NPWSSA for park camping
Prioritise official NPWSSA camping when that product fits your trip — mornings become walks, not long unsealed shuffles. When you want commercial hotels or the resort, base near the walk you will actually do: Wilpena for trailheads, Hawker for town services, Blinman for northern camps. Official park camping: NPWSSA — camping & accommodation.
Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park fees and official parks.sa.gov.au bookings are never affiliated.
Last practical town depends on the walk, not on which Booking card looks cheapest. Confirm hours on the day. No invented pump or room prices. Official NPWSSA camping is never affiliated.

Wilpena is the product. Hawker works if you pack the night before and leave earlier than feels polite. Port Augusta is a travel-day reset, not a peak-day base. Pest-control night closures punish dusk finishes on named tracks including the Outside trail.
Book NPWSSA camps on parks.sa.gov.au only. Blinman is the quieter jump north when roads are open. If Brachina / Bunyeroo are shut after rain, stay on the sealed Wilpena–Hawker spine — do not invent a clay-crest shortcut.
