Things to do in Ikara-Flinders Ranges
Last reviewed · verify live conditions with NPWSSA
Most first visits revolve around Wangara Lookout plus the Cazneaux Tree or a Brachina Gorge drive if roads are open. The hard day is St Mary Peak — only when open and planned. Mawson Trail cycling is a different sport. Do not try to collect every track on a first visit.

Day one rule
Pick one primary experience (usually Wangara). Do not collect every gorge and the peak on a first visit — especially after the Adelaide drive.
Weather / energy bail-out
Lookouts, the Cazneaux Tree or time at the Visitor Centre beat a forced hard hike in 38°C or a wet unsealed road. Bail-outs are competence.
Hard walk filter
St Mary Peak and Ohlssen Bagge only when open, fit and planned from the start — never as impulse add-ons after a hot Wangara morning.
- 1
Wangara Lookout (incl. Hills Homestead)
First visit · moderate–hard · half-day
The default first walk: creek gums, Hills Homestead, then a steep climb to Pound views. A complete day can stop at the homestead and still succeed.
- 2
Cazneaux Tree
Easy · photography · heat-day bail-out
The living river red gum from the 1937 photograph, plus an easy interpretive trail. First evening, recovery morning, or the honest Plan B when long trails are closed.
- 3
Brachina Gorge Geological Trail
Self-drive · geology · road-status critical
The essential scenic drive: signed deep-time rocks and a late-afternoon wallaby window. Unsealed. Closes after rain. Not a fossil-collecting hunt.
- 4
St Mary Peak / Ngarri Mudlanha
Hard · full day · summer closures
The signature hard day when open. Leave by 9am. Traditional Owners prefer you do not climb the absolute summit — Tanderra Saddle is the respectful high point.
- 5
Arkaroo Rock (Akurra Adnya)
Cultural · short hike · morning light
Adnyamathanha paintings at respectful distance. Do not touch. Sacred Canyon is a different product — guided only via licensed operators.
- 6
Yellow-footed rock-wallabies
Wildlife · dusk · no chase
Late afternoon at Scree Slope in Brachina is the published ranger tip. Stay on the road. Binoculars beat a scramble. Seeing one is not a booking.
- 7
Harder walks & Bunyeroo (when open)
Hard / moderate · status-critical
Mount Ohlssen Bagge is the shorter steep alternative to the peak. Bunyeroo is the gum-lined gorge hike — only if the unsealed road is open. One hard effort per day.

- Day pack 20–30 LWater, layers, snacks, first aid and extra jacket as rangers recommend
- Light insulating layerMornings and lookouts can be cold even when midday hits the thirties
