Ikara-Flinders Ranges walks & lookouts
Guide updated · grades and open status change — verify NPWSSA
Start with a clear lookout walk vs hard peak decision. Wangara + one optional easy stop covers most first visits. Distances, grades and times below are planning ranges — always confirm on NPWSSA and park alerts. Heat, flood and summer closures change.
Decide before you lace up
- Easy lookouts and short walks: Cazneaux Tree, Hucks Lookout, Brachina self-drive stops — high reward, still real sun and water.
- Moderate half-days: Wangara (or Homestead only), Arkaroo Rock, Bunyeroo Gorge when the unsealed road is open.
- Hard peak days: St Mary Peak / Ngarri Mudlanha, Mount Ohlssen Bagge — one hero only, leave by 9am, status open, turnaround time.
Stacking a peak plus a gorge plus the tree is the classic first-visit failure mode. Pick the table row that matches energy, then open the full trail guide for getting-there detail.

Walks FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
What is the best first walk in Ikara-Flinders Ranges?
Most first-timers start at Wangara Lookout (or Hills Homestead if heat or kids say so). St Mary Peak is a separate full day when open. Always verify track status with NPWSSA and the Wilpena Visitor Centre.
How hard are the Pound climbs?
Wangara is moderate–hard because of the steep final climb. Mount Ohlssen Bagge is hard and short. St Mary Peak is a 6–9 hour mountain day. Fit groups only, early start, official open status.
Can I do St Mary Peak and Brachina on the same day?
Usually a bad plan. The peak is a 6–9 hour commitment with an early start. Add a gorge drive only on a different day, and only if roads are open.
