Where you start
Arkaroo Rock car park
Signed car park about 17 km south of Wilpena on the Hawker–Blinman Road. Google Street View is available for parts of this route.
How to get there
- From Wilpena, drive south on the Hawker–Blinman Road about 17 km to the signed Arkaroo Rock car park.
- From Hawker, continue toward Wilpena and watch for the signed turn before you reach the resort.
- Park only in the signed car park. Do not drive off-road for a closer photo.
- Confirm alerts before you leave Wilpena — flood and fire rules apply to this corridor too.
How to do it (step by step)
- Walk the marked trail from the car park. Official planning figures: about 3 km / 2 hours return. Stay on the path.
- View paintings from respectful distance only. Do not touch, climb, wet, chalk, light or lean equipment on the art.
- Morning light is best for seeing the ochre and charcoal. Sunset is for the Chace Range view — pick one primary goal.
- If the site is crowded, wait your turn. Do not step off the viewing area for a “clearer shot.”
- Return the same way. Carry water even though the walk is short. Heat still applies.
Respectful visit
Akurra Adnya (Arkaroo Rock) is a significant Adnyamathanha painting site. Official interpretation: ochre and charcoal images that tell creation story for Wilpena Pound, including Akurra (creation serpents) whose bodies form the Pound walls. This guide does not invent further story detail.
Do not touch. Do not climb. Do not remove anything. If a site is crowded, wait. The walk is short; the site is not a backdrop for a picnic or a climbing session.
What the walk feels like
Official figures: about 3 km and 2 hours return. The path is a formed hike, not a car-door lookout. Mixed groups and kids who will stay on the path usually manage it; anyone who will scramble for photos should stay in the car.
Heat still applies. Carry water, a hat and SPF. There is no reliable natural water. Check alerts — flood and fire-danger closures can shut this corridor too.
Morning art or sunset range — pick one
Morning light is the reason most people come: the paintings read more clearly. Sunset is a different visit — Chace Range colour from the same precinct. Trying to do both plus a Pound peak in one day usually means you rush the art.
If the group is mixed, make the paintings the job. The range view is a bonus if you still have patience and water.
This is not Sacred Canyon
Yura Mulka (Sacred Canyon) is restricted / guided only via licensed operators (Wilpena Pound Resort or Wadna — [VERIFY] current operators and summer closures). Turning up at a closed gate is not a visit.
Arkaroo Rock is the public, signed art site. If a tour is full or closed, this walk plus the Visitor Centre displays are the respectful alternative — not a freestyle canyon approach.
Heat kit (4 L+ on long walks, sun, grip shoes, optional PLB): gear hub (kit searches live there).

Extra tips
- This is a cultural site, not a playground or a climbing wall.
- Combine with a Wilpena afternoon, not with a rushed St Mary Peak the same morning.
- If you cannot get a Sacred Canyon tour, this is the public art-site alternative — not a consolation prize.
- Street View exists for parts of the approach — useful for a first-time driver, not a substitute for live road status.
Often paired with Cazneaux Tree— only if energy and weather allow.
