Brachina Gorge Geological Trail
Area: Brachina & Bunyeroo gorges
Guide updated · Track conditions, fees, road access and closures change. Always verify w…
The park’s main scenic drive: signed rock sequences, fossil context, and yellow-footed rock-wallaby habitat (try Scree Slope in late afternoon). Unsealed. Closes after rain. Check live road reports before you go.
- Self-drive geological trail (walks optional)
- Half day with stops · longer if you add camp or wallaby time
- ~20 km self-drive trail
- Effort: easy
- Best for: Geology, early-life fossils context, yellow-footed rock-wallabies at dusk
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on parks.sa.gov.au and with Wilpena Visitor Centre before you go.
Official NPWSSA info (verify status)Do not pair: Do not add St Mary Peak, a Bunyeroo hike, and a camp move on the same moving day. One gorge afternoon. Wallabies at dusk need the road still open and a slow drive out.
Turnaround: If the Outback Road Report is unsure, stay at Wilpena. On the drive, skip closed spurs and unmarked scree. Official vs the sign: a closed gate is live status. Fossils stay in the ground regardless of what a blog said.
- Forcing the gorge after rain because it is “only 20 km” — closures and recovery bills are the product, not the geology.
- Chasing yellow-footed rock-wallabies up Scree Slope or stacking this drive after a 9-hour peak.

Where you start
Brachina Gorge Road (north of Wilpena)
Self-drive trail along Brachina Gorge Road. High-clearance 2WD in good conditions; some campground spurs recommend 4WD. Google Street View exists for parts of the gorge.
How to get there
- From Wilpena, follow signed routes toward Brachina Gorge / Trezona / Aroona (typically via Brachina Gorge Road).
- Check park alerts and DIT Outback Road Report (1300 361 033). Rally, flood and maintenance closures happen on this road.
- High-clearance 2WD in good conditions; some campground spurs (Brachina East, Koolamon) recommend or require 4WD.
- Allow half a day with stops. This is not a 40-minute lookout hop from the resort. Fill fuel and water first.
How to do it (step by step)
- If the road report is unsure, stay at Wilpena. A sedan on a wet clay crest is a recovery bill.
- Drive slowly. Stop at signed geological interpretation points. Stay out of closed areas and off unmarked scree.
- Do not hammer fossils or collect rock. Look, photograph, leave.
- Late afternoon at Scree Slope is the ranger-recommended window for yellow-footed rock-wallabies — stay in the vehicle or on marked ground; do not chase wildlife or fly a drone.
- Trezona campground sits near Ediacaran “Golden Spike” context — walk only on marked trails, and only if you have booked if you plan to stay.
What the drive is for
Official description: a roughly 20 km self-drive trail through million-year-old rocks, sediment, fossil context and even meteorite-debris interpretation. Signage covers past climates, range formation and early life. It is the right place to understand why Nilpena Ediacara National Park exists next door in the same geological story — without treating this page as a research paper.
Allow half a day if you will actually get out at the signs. A “quick loop” that never stops is just a dusty commute. Combine with one walk or one camp, not a peak on the same moving day.
Road realism
Official public roads are high-clearance 2WD, caravan and trailer capable in good conditions. After rain, stay out until the Outback Road Report and park alerts say otherwise. Some camp approaches have 4WD sections.
Flood closures have shut this road. A rally has closed selected gorge roads and camps on announced dates. Recheck the morning you travel. Download maps before you drop into the gorge — coverage is patchy.
Wallabies at Scree Slope
Rangers recommend late afternoon at Scree Slope for yellow-footed rock-wallabies. Bounceback conservation work is why you might actually see one. Stay in the vehicle or on marked ground. Binoculars beat a scramble up the scree.
Dawn and dusk also mean wildlife on the road. Drive slowly. A wallaby photo is not worth a night without a windscreen in remote country. Do not fly drones over wildlife.
Fossils stay in the ground
Look, photograph, leave. Do not hammer, pocket or “just take a small one.” Trezona sits near internationally significant Ediacaran context. Walk only on marked trails.
Nilpena Ediacara National Park is a separate park and a separate visit. This drive orients you to the story; it does not give you a collecting licence or a back-door into restricted fossil sites.
Two failure modes (and the turnaround)
Failure one: leaving Wilpena without the road report. At last official review Brachina Gorge Road remained closed pending repair. A printed geology itinerary is not access.
Failure two: treating Scree Slope as a scramble. Rangers recommend late afternoon from the vehicle or marked ground. Official vs the sign: stay on the road corridor; do not hammer fossils; do not invent a dusk hike off-track because the wallaby did not pose.
Heat kit (4 L+ on long walks, sun, grip shoes, optional PLB): gear hub (kit searches live there).

Extra tips
- Download the Discover the Flinders Ranges app for narrated geology before you lose coverage.
- Combine with Aroona or Trezona camping on a longer stay — not as a rushed add-on after St Mary Peak.
- If you only have one gorge afternoon, Brachina is the geology and wallaby choice; Bunyeroo is the hike.
- Screenshot alerts and an offline map at Wilpena. Coverage in the gorge is worse than the hub.
Often paired with Bunyeroo Gorge— only if energy and weather allow.
