Bunyeroo Gorge Hike

Area: Brachina & Bunyeroo gorges

Peaceful river-red-gum gorge framed by rugged rock. Starts from the Bunyeroo car park, about 18 km north of Wilpena on the Bunyeroo Gorge Road (unsealed — weather-affected). Also a scenic drive with lookouts.

  • Moderate gorge hike
  • ~3.5 hours return
  • ~7.5 km return
  • Effort: moderate
  • Best for: Gum-lined gorge, wildlife, a cooler corridor than the Pound rim

Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on parks.sa.gov.au and with Wilpena Visitor Centre before you go.

Official NPWSSA info (verify status)

Do not pair: Do not do both gorge products at speed on a first visit. Pick the walk (Bunyeroo) or the geology/wallaby drive (Brachina). Razorback lookouts are the only honest add-on if the same road is still open and energy remains.

Turnaround: If the road report or alerts are unsure, skip the hike. On the trail, reverse when heat, water or weather turns — there is no creek-bed bypass that is a good idea. Official vs the sign: a closed gate is live status; this page is not.

  • Leaving Wilpena without checking DIT and NPWSSA — then meeting a closed gate or a wet clay crest in a sedan.
  • Stacking Bunyeroo hike + Brachina geology + a camp move because both gorges are “on the way north.”

Where you start

Bunyeroo car park

About 18 km north of Wilpena along the Bunyeroo Gorge Road. Unsealed. High-clearance 2WD is the official public-road baseline in good conditions; rain can close it.

How to get there

  1. From Wilpena, take the Hawker–Blinman Road north, then the signed Bunyeroo Valley / Gorge road (starts about 4 km north of the Wilpena junction). About 18 km of unsealed road to the gorge car park.
  2. Check DIT Outback Road Report (1300 361 033) and park alerts the morning you go. Flood closures have shut Brachina, Bunyeroo and Wirrealpa roads.
  3. High-clearance 2WD is the official public-road baseline in good conditions. After rain, stay on the sealed Wilpena road.
  4. Drive slowly. Wildlife at dawn and dusk. Fill fuel and drinking water at Wilpena or Hawker first.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. If the road report or alerts are unsure, skip the hike. There is no creek-bed bypass that is a good idea.
  2. Hike the marked gorge trail from the Bunyeroo car park. Official figures: about 7.5 km / 3.5 hours return. Stay in the marked corridor.
  3. Watch for wildlife rather than forcing kilometres. This is a looking walk through river red gums and rock, not a summit.
  4. Carry water as for a half-day. Shade is better than the Pound rim; heat and flash-flood risk still apply.
  5. If energy remains and the road is still open, add Razorback or a valley lookout on the way back — not a second gorge plus a camp move.

Who this walk is for

Bunyeroo is the gum-lined gorge hike for people who want a cooler corridor than the Pound rim, and who have already checked that the unsealed road is open. Official figures: about 7.5 km and 3.5 hours return from the gorge car park.

It suits a second or third day after Wilpena orientation — not a first-afternoon dash from Adelaide. Mixed groups who will stay on the marked path usually enjoy it. Anyone who wants a peak should do Wangara or Ohlssen Bagge on a different day.

Road first, hike second

The walk only exists if the Bunyeroo Gorge Road is open. Official public roads are high-clearance 2WD, caravan-capable in good conditions. After rain that sentence dies. Check the Outback Road Report and NPWSSA alerts every morning you intend to leave the sealed Wilpena road.

At last official-page review (10 Sep 2026), Brachina Gorge Road and Bunyeroo Gorge Road remain closed pending repair. Recheck live — do not treat a printed itinerary as access.

How the gorge feels

River red gums, rock walls and a creek that may be dry or may flash after rain. It is a looking walk: wildlife, shade, and a sense of the northern park that Wilpena does not give you. Stay in the marked corridor. Do not invent a scramble for a photo.

Heat still applies. Carry more water than a “short gorge stroll” suggests. Tell someone your return time. Coverage is patchy. Screenshot the trailhead map at Wilpena.

Lookouts and Brachina — do not stack everything

If the road is open and energy remains, Razorback and the Bunyeroo valley pulls are the natural add-on. They are the same unsealed corridor — same rain rule.

Brachina is the geology and wallaby drive, not a second hike to squeeze into the same afternoon. One gorge with time to get out beats a dusty commute through both.

Two failure modes (and the turnaround)

Failure one: treating an unsealed weather-affected road as a sealed lookout hop. At last official review Bunyeroo Gorge Road remained closed pending repair. Recheck the morning you travel.

Failure two: inventing a second gorge plus a peak because the printed itinerary named both. Official vs the sign: the Outback Road Report and the park alert win. If the gorge is shut, Plan B lives on the sealed Wilpena road and on sites the alert currently lists as open.

Extra tips

  • Pair the hike with the Bunyeroo lookouts / Razorback views if you still have daylight and the road is open.
  • Late afternoon light in the gorge is kinder than midday on the Pound floor.
  • If you only have one gorge afternoon, pick Bunyeroo for the walk or Brachina for geology and wallabies — not both at speed.
  • Download offline maps before you leave Wilpena. Coverage in the gorge is worse than the hub.

Often paired with Brachina Gorge— only if energy and weather allow.
