Where you start
Wilpena bushwalking trailhead
Begins from the bushwalking trailhead at the Wilpena Visitor Centre complex. Steep rocky inclines; rewarding views of Wilpena Pound and surrounding ranges.
How to get there
- Base overnight at Wilpena or Hawker. Same trailhead precinct as St Mary Peak and Wangara.
- Park in the signed Wilpena visitor / resort car parks. Do not leave valuables visible.
- Check official alerts and the summer-closures map at the Visitor Centre before you lace up.
- There is no public transport. The sealed road into Wilpena is the default access — do not invent a gorge shortcut to this trailhead.
How to do it (step by step)
- Confirm the trail is open. Typical summer closure is December–February ([VERIFY] current map). All trails close on Catastrophic Fire Danger.
- Log the Bushwalkers Register if you will be out three or more hours. Tell someone your latest return.
- Leave early. Carry water as for a long walk — official notes ask for at least four litres on walks over two hours. Shade is thin on the climb.
- Follow the signed Ohlssen Bagge track. The climb is short on paper and long in the sun. Views of the Pound come before the true summit for much of the upper section.
- Turn around if heat, loose rock or late time is winning. Return the same way. Do not add St Mary Peak or Malloga the same day.
What to expect
Official figures: about 6.4 km and 4 hours. The time is in the steepness, not the kilometres. You earn Pound views that rival longer days if the weather is kind.
This is still a hard walk. Independent walkers often underestimate it because the distance looks like a suburban loop. Treat it as a mountain morning: early start, register, water, a turnaround time.
Closed during summer months of December, January and February on the official page ([VERIFY] current map). Same Catastrophic Fire Danger rule as every trail. Flood and pest-control closures can also shut walking tracks — recheck the morning you go.
Who this walk is for
Choose Ohlssen Bagge when the group is fit, the trail is open, and you want Pound views without a six-to-nine-hour St Mary Peak day. It suits a second hard morning after a Wangara orientation day — not a first-afternoon impulse after the Adelaide drive.
If anyone is unsure on rock, or the forecast is hot, do Wangara to Hills Homestead or a lookout instead. There is no prize for forcing the steep line.
Versus St Mary Peak
Shorter, still hard, less of a cultural-summit question. St Mary Peak / Ngarri Mudlanha is the signature high walk, with a Traditional Owner request to stay at Tanderra Saddle. Ohlssen Bagge is the compact steep alternative when that trail is closed or you have already done it.
Do not stack them. A St Mary Peak morning plus Ohlssen Bagge after lunch is how people finish in the heat with empty bottles. One hard walk per day is the honest plan.
If it is closed
Summer heat closures are the usual reason. Flood, fire-danger and pest-control rules can also apply. If the gate or the Visitor Centre says no, switch to Wangara (when open), Hucks Lookout, the Cazneaux Tree or a gorge drive if roads agree.
Do not look for a “back way” around a heat closure. Recheck parks.sa.gov.au alerts and the Wilpena Visitor Centre the morning you travel.
Heat kit (4 L+ on long walks, sun, grip shoes, optional PLB): gear hub (kit searches live there).

Extra tips
- Good “second hard walk” on a cooler day if St Mary Peak is closed or already done.
- Watch for reptiles on warm rock — look, do not handle.
- Tanderra Saddle on St Mary Peak is the cultural-high-point walk. Ohlssen Bagge is the shorter steep alternative, not a substitute summit stunt.
- Pair with Wangara or the Cazneaux Tree on a different day — not both hard climbs before lunch.
Often paired with Wangara Lookout— only if energy and weather allow.
