St Mary Peak Hike – Ngarri Mudlanha
Area: Wilpena Pound (Ikara) & Visitor Centre
Guide updated · Track conditions, fees, road access and closures change. Always verify w…
The park’s hardest popular day hike: substantial elevation, heat, and a culturally important summit. Rangers recommend leaving no later than 9am (10am during daylight saving). Traditional Owners prefer visitors do not climb the absolute summit — Tanderra Saddle already delivers the main Pound views.
- Hard / challenging full-day hike
- Direct ~6 hrs return · loop ~9 hrs
- Direct ~14.6 km return · loop ~21.5 km
- Effort: hard
- Best for: Fit walkers wanting the park’s signature high view — if the trail is open
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on parks.sa.gov.au and with Wilpena Visitor Centre before you go.
Official NPWSSA info (verify status)Do not pair: Do not stack St Mary Peak with Ohlssen Bagge, a gorge circuit, or a camp move on the same day. One hard hike. Easy lookout or rest the next morning.
Turnaround: Leave no later than 9am (10am DST). Agree a hard clock at the trailhead. Tanderra Saddle is a complete success. If anyone is late, hot or unsteady before the steep final sections, reverse the same way — do not invent a loop to “make it worth it.”
- Same-day Adelaide drive (~5 hours) plus this hike — late start, heat, and a dusk finish into pest-control night closures.
- Treating Tanderra Saddle as “almost there” and pushing the culturally sensitive summit metres after water or daylight is already thin.

Where you start
Wilpena bushwalking trailhead (Visitor Centre / resort complex)
Start at the signed bushwalking trailhead at the Wilpena Visitor Centre complex, near Wilpena Pound Resort. This is a full-day commitment, not a lookout stroll from the car. Log walks of three or more hours in the Bushwalkers Register at the trailhead.
How to get there
- Base overnight at Wilpena or Hawker. Same-day drive from Adelaide (~5 hours) plus this hike is a bad plan.
- Park in the signed Wilpena visitor / resort car parks. Do not leave valuables visible.
- Collect current advice at the Visitor Centre (typically 8am–5pm daily — [VERIFY] hours). Ask about pest-control night closures, summer heat closures and fire ratings.
- There is no public transport. Unsealed approach roads elsewhere in the park can close after rain — the sealed road into Wilpena is the default access.
How to do it (step by step)
- Check official alerts and the summer-closures map the night before and again at the Visitor Centre. This hike is typically closed December–February ([VERIFY] current dates). All trails close on Catastrophic Fire Danger.
- Log the Bushwalkers Register (walks ≥3 hours). Tell someone your route and latest return time.
- Leave no later than 9am (10am DST). Carry ≥4 L water per person, map/compass or offline map, whistle, jacket, sun protection and food.
- Choose Outside (steeper scarp) or Inside (longer, through the Pound). Reach Tanderra Saddle for the main views. The short extension to the summit is optional — and Traditional Owners prefer you do not go to the absolute top.
- Turn around at any point, especially before the steep final sections. Return the same way, or complete the longer loop via Hills Homestead / Pound Gap if you planned that day shape and still have daylight and water.
- Cooinda Camp is the overnight walkers’ site inside the Pound (gas/liquid fuel only — do not assume water or a toilet). Most day walkers should not count on it for a sit-down rest.
What to expect
This is a full-day mountain hike in semi-arid country, not a lookout stroll. Independent reports put elevation gain around 800 m — treat that as a planning figure and [VERIFY] against current official notes. Heat, rock underfoot and a long walk back still apply even if you turn around at the saddle.
St Mary Peak / Ngarri Mudlanha (~1171 m) is the highest peak in the Flinders Ranges and is central to the Adnyamathanha creation story (Akurra / serpents forming Ikara, the Pound). Walk with that in mind. The official park page states that Traditional Owners prefer visitors do not climb to the summit. Tanderra Saddle is the respectful high point for most people — and the views across the Pound are already the reason you came.
Day shape & reverse
Treat this as one job. Rangers recommend departure no later than 9am, or 10am during daylight saving. A realistic direct-route day is six hours on the move plus rests; the loop is a nine-hour project. Build a hard turnaround time before you leave the trailhead — not a “we’ll see how we feel at the saddle.”
You can turn around at any point, especially before the steep final sections. Stopping at Tanderra Saddle is the shorter option rangers point people to. Do not leave the marked track for a shortcut. If weather, heat or energy turns against you, go back the way you came.
The loop via Hills Homestead / Pound Gap only works if you started with that plan, still have water and daylight, and the tracks are open. If the out-and-back is already hard work, do not keep going just to finish a loop.
Outside vs Inside approaches
Two main approaches leave the Wilpena trailhead: the Outside route (steeper scarp) and the Inside route (longer, through the Pound). Confirm which is open — pest-control night closures have applied to selected tracks including the Outside trail. Do not treat last year’s blog as a live map.
If you only have one good day and mixed fitness, Wangara Lookout is the better Pound-view walk. St Mary Peak is for fit groups who have already checked closures and accepted a long, hot day.
Cultural note — stay at the saddle
Adnyamathanha people have asked visitors not to climb the absolute summit. Tell your group that before you start, so nobody goes the last few metres for a photo. The same respect applies to rock art and cultural sites anywhere in the park: do not touch, climb on, or remove anything.
This guide does not invent Yura Muda detail. For cultural interpretation use official park material, the Visitor Centre, and licensed Adnyamathanha-guided products (including restricted sites such as Yura Mulka / Sacred Canyon).
Hazards that actually apply here
Heat is the primary killer-of-plans. Summer maxima commonly sit 30–45°C. There is no reliable drinking water on the hill. Carry what the official page asks for longer walks — at least four litres per person — and more if you run hot. Start early; avoid midday on the open scarp.
Rock is steep and loose on the final sections. A slip here can mean a rescue, not a grazed knee. Mobile coverage is patchy, especially in low country and gorges; 000 needs reception. Emergency+ helps when a signal exists. A PLB or satellite messenger is worth considering on this hike.
Flash flooding is the rain hazard (creeks are ephemeral). All trails close on Catastrophic Fire Danger. Wood/solid-fuel fires have a defined prohibition season ([VERIFY] current window; official pages have cited mid-October to early April). Inside the Pound, fuel rules are stricter (gas/liquid only, limited).
If it is closed (common)
As of the last official-page review (21 Sep 2026), the St Mary Peak outside trail was listed open with care for loose rocks and minor erosion. Brachina / Bunyeroo Gorge Roads were closed pending repair. Pound creeks were still flowing and considered dangerous to cross. This hike also has a standing summer-closure pattern (typically 1 December–1 March / December–February — [VERIFY]). Night-time pest-control closures have run on selected tracks including the Outside trail (1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026). Most of the park is also listed closed 9pm 6 November–9pm 9 November 2026 for pest work.
If the trail is closed, switch to a lookout that is open, the Cazneaux Tree, or a gorge drive if roads are open. Do not look for a way around a heat closure or flood gate. Recheck parks.sa.gov.au alerts and the Wilpena Visitor Centre the morning you go.
Two failure modes (and the turnaround)
Failure one: arriving from Adelaide the same morning. Rangers want you gone by 9am. A 5am CBD departure still lands you at Wilpena too late, too cooked, and tempted to skip water. Sleep Hawker or Wilpena the night before — or demote to Wangara.
Failure two: summit ego after the saddle. Official park pages state Traditional Owners prefer visitors do not climb the absolute summit. The Pound views are already at Tanderra Saddle. Extra metres add exposure and disrespect for a photo that does not change the day.
Official vs the sign: this page is planning from NPWSSA text, not a walked status check. The trailhead register, Visitor Centre counter and current alerts win on the morning you go. If Pound walking trails are closed pending assessment, this hike is in that set — do not invent a back way.

Extra tips
- Tanderra Saddle is a complete success. The extra summit metres are culturally sensitive and add exposure.
- If you are late, hot, or anyone is unsteady, turn around. Finishing at 4pm in 38°C is not worth it.
- Pair with an easy next day (Wangara, Cazneaux Tree, or a gorge drive) — not Mount Ohlssen Bagge the same afternoon.
Often paired with Wangara Lookout— only if energy and weather allow.
