Wangara / Wangarra Lookout Hike (incl. Hills Homestead)
Area: Wilpena Pound (Ikara) & Visitor Centre
Guide updated · Track conditions, fees, road access and closures change. Always verify w…
The best first walk in the park for most visitors: follow Wilpena Creek through river red gums and native pines to Hills Homestead, then a steep climb to lower and upper lookouts over Ikara (Wilpena Pound). St Mary Peak / Ngarri Mudlanha is visible from the rim.
- Moderate–hard (steep final climb)
- Lower ~3 hrs · upper ~3.5 hrs return
- Lower lookout ~7.2 km return · upper ~7.8 km return
- Effort: moderate
- Best for: First Pound walk — mixed groups who want the amphitheatre without a 9-hour day
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on parks.sa.gov.au and with Wilpena Visitor Centre before you go.
Official NPWSSA info (verify status)Do not pair: Do not add a hard peak the same afternoon. Pair with Cazneaux Tree / Hucks Lookout, or rest. Gorge roads are a different product and a different rain rule.
Turnaround: Decide at Hills Homestead. Homestead only is a successful Pound visit. If anyone is heat-sick on the climb, go down into creek-gum shade. Do not push the upper lookout to finish a printed itinerary.
- Treating the homestead as a picnic then forcing the rim in 38°C with one shared bottle.
- Pairing Wangara with St Mary Peak or Ohlssen Bagge the same day because “we came all this way from Adelaide.”

Where you start
Wilpena Visitor Centre / bushwalking trailhead
Start from the Wilpena area / Visitor Centre complex. The route follows Wilpena Creek into Pound Gap to Hills Homestead (heritage site), then climbs steeply to one or both lookouts. Google Street View is available for parts of this route.
How to get there
- Same trailhead precinct as St Mary Peak — Wilpena Visitor Centre / resort complex.
- Park in signed visitor car parks. Use toilets at the complex before you start.
- Confirm current access: at last review the walking trail into Wilpena Pound was open only as far as the vehicle turn-around shelter (care at wash-outs). Pound creeks were dangerous to cross. Pest-control night closures can also affect named tracks.
- Some reports mention a shuttle into the Pound from the resort — [VERIFY] current availability at the Visitor Centre before publishing it as your plan.
How to do it (step by step)
- Follow the Hills Homestead Walk along Wilpena Creek (river red gums, native pines, seasonal wildflowers) into Pound Gap.
- Hills Homestead is the natural first bail-out and a heritage stop. The lower lookout is about 300 m on from the homestead; the upper lookout another ~300 m.
- The final climb is the hard bit. If knees, heat or kids are done at the homestead, turn around — you still walked into the Pound.
- Log the Bushwalkers Register if your plan is three or more hours. Carry water even on this “half-day” — shade fades on the climb.
- Return the same way unless you have a verified shuttle or a second car plan. Do not assume a bus will appear at the homestead.
What to expect
Wangara (also written Wangarra on some signs and maps) is the park’s usual half-day walk: enough to show the Pound’s scale without wearing out a mixed group. Official figures: lower lookout about 7.2 km / 3 hours return; upper about 7.8 km / 3.5 hours. The homestead stretch is the easier part; the lookout climb is steep.
Ikara — the Adnyamathanha name for Wilpena Pound — means meeting place. From the rim you see a ring of quartzite walls around a remnant valley floor, with St Mary Peak / Ngarri Mudlanha on the skyline. You do not need the 14 km peak hike to get a sense of the place.
How the day usually goes, and when to turn around
A clean plan: leave Wilpena after a Visitor Centre check, walk to Hills Homestead, decide there. Homestead only = still a successful Pound visit. Lower lookout = the classic photo. Upper lookout = extra steep metres for people who still have water and knees.
You return on the same track. After rain the creek can run — “usually dry” is not a promise. If anyone is heat-sick on the climb, go down, sit in creek-gum shade, and skip the rim.
Some commercial notes mention a shuttle from the resort into the Pound. Treat that as [VERIFY] on the day. Build the walk as an out-and-back from the Visitor Centre so you are not stranded if the shuttle is not running.
Hills Homestead
Hills Homestead is a heritage site on the Pound floor, reached along Wilpena Creek. It is the natural rest, toilet-of-sorts decision point (do not assume facilities), and the place to eat something before the climb. Stay on marked paths; the homestead is not a playground.
The shorter Hills Homestead Walk (~6.6 km / 2 hrs return on the official page) is the same corridor without the lookout climb — use it for kids, heat, or a recovery morning after St Mary Peak.
Hazards
The steep final climb is where people who “only packed a water bottle for a stroll” get into trouble. Carry more than you think. Heat, sun and a rocky path are the real risks — not tides, crocs or snow.
Register if you will be out three or more hours. Coverage is unreliable. Screenshot the trailhead map. Check pest-control night closures if you are tempted by a late start.
Two failure modes (and the turnaround)
Failure one: packing like a city lookout. The homestead stretch feels gentle; the rim is not. Carry more water than a “half-day stroll” suggests. Shade fades on the climb.
Failure two: stacking this with a peak because the itinerary named both. Wangara is the first-visit Pound walk. St Mary Peak is a separate full day when open. Official vs the sign: trailhead notices and the Visitor Centre beat this page on the morning you go.
If the official notice only lists the Pound trail as far as the vehicle turn-around shelter, do not invent a rim walk to the lookouts. Use sites the current alert names as open. Official vs the sign: trailhead tape wins.
Heat kit (4 L+ on long walks, sun, grip shoes, optional PLB): gear hub (kit searches live there).

Extra tips
- This is the walk to do on day one if St Mary Peak is closed, too hot, or too long.
- Morning light on the Pound walls is kinder than a 2pm climb.
- Combine with the short Cazneaux Tree / Spirit of Endurance stop, not with Ohlssen Bagge the same morning.
Often paired with Cazneaux Tree— only if energy and weather allow.
